A deck is an absolutely fabulous place to enjoy the South Florida weather and you would be hard pressed to find a home in Admirals Cove without one. However if you choose a traditional wood deck it is extremely important to care for your deck each year in order to insure its longevity. For your deck to be around for many years in the future it will require a little maintenance each year. The wood that makes up the steps and surface of your deck gets subjected to all sorts of stress from constant use. Over time if not cared for correctly your deck may become damaged and unsafe. Be sure to check for and repair any damages at least once a year.
Replacing Damaged Boards:
1.) Be sure to examine the entire surface of your deck including steps and look for any sign of stress or damage like cracking, rotting, excessive curling, and severed boards. All damages will need to be replaced.
2.) Be sure to measure each damaged section twice to be sure on sizes and then write them down right away. Having the right measurements is key to the success of this project.
3.) When searching for replacement boards pressure treated wood is preferable otherwise you will need to seal the wood yourself. It is important to use treated wood for your deck to last.
4.) Measure your new wood and mark your desired board lengths. Be sure to measure twice before cutting. Often the cutting can be handled by your local lumberyard or hardware store.
5.) Once boards are cut to size remove your damaged boards but be careful not to damage other boards in the process. Replace these boards with your new boards and then paint to match.
